Be Good to Your Body
People with diabetic nerve pain (DNP) should care for their feet properly. Of all the nerves in your body, the nerves in your feet are the ones most often affected by diabetic nerve pain. Some strategies for healthy foot care include:
- Cleaning your feet daily using warm—not hot—water and a gentle soap. Carefully dry your feet, including between your toes, with a soft towel
- Check your feet daily for signs of irritation or injury. If you cannot see parts of your feet clearly, such as your soles, ask someone to help you. Let your healthcare provider know if anything is bothering you or looks infected
- Make sure to wear shoes or slippers to prevent foot injuries, and always wear shoes that fit properly
Talk to your healthcare provider about other things that may help you feel better, such as:
- Walking regularly
- Taking warm—not hot—baths
- Using elastic stockings. They can help protect your feet from injuries and skin irritation
Note: These activities may be impossible for some people with DNP because of their increased sensitivity to pain. Before beginning or changing an exercise program, please consult your healthcare professional
