Talking to Your Doctor
If you think you may be experiencing some of the symptoms of depression, it's a good idea to talk to your doctor about it.
Your primary care provider is a good place to start. He or she can evaluate your symptoms and determine whether depression is the underlying cause. You can get a head start by creating your own list of symptoms by using the symptom body map checklist and the self-assessment checklist The symptom body map checklist allows you to build a list of symptoms that you can rate based on how each impacts your ability to function in everyday life. The self-assessment checklist is a quick tool that you can use to identify your symptoms and bring them to your doctor. Your doctor may suggest a course of treatment or may refer you to a specialist, such as a psychiatrist or a psychologist. A psychiatrist specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of mental illness, whereas a psychologist specializes in talk therapy. If you don't already have a primary care provider, see if your friends, family members, or health insurance company can recommend someone.
It's a good idea to prepare for the visit. Create a list of questions you may want to ask, along with some notes about your symptoms and your medical history. Here are a few suggestions to help you start the conversation with your doctor:
- Do you have experience with treating depression?
- What is your treatment approach?
- How do you involve family and friends in treatment?
- How frequently should I see you, and how can you be reached in case of emergency?
- Can you prescribe medication?
The more detail you can provide, the easier it is for your doctor to make an accurate diagnosis. You may also want to ask a trusted friend or relative to come with you. He or she can take notes during the visit and provide support afterward.
