Tips for Managing Pain

Adjust text size:

The goal of treatment with Cymbalta is to help relieve diabetic nerve pain caused by damaged nerves. This pain can make it difficult for you to do the things you want to do. It is important to be aware of the first step in managing the discomfort associated with diabetic nerve pain-preventing further nerve damage by controlling blood sugar levels with proper diet and diabetes medication. In addition, it is a good idea to:

  • Maintain an ideal weight
  • Exercise regularly

Note: Before beginning or changing an exercise program, please consult your healthcare professional.

People with diabetic nerve pain should care for their feet properly. Of all the nerves in your body, the nerves in your feet are the ones most affected by diabetic nerve pain. Some strategies for healthy foot care include:

  • Cleaning your feet daily using warm-not hot-water and a gentle soap
  • Check your feet daily for signs of irritation or injury. Let your healthcare provider know if anything is bothering you or looks infected
  • Make sure to wear shoes or slippers to prevent foot injuries, and always wear shoes that fit properly

Other things that may help relieve the pain you are experiencing:

  • Walking regularly
  • Taking warm (not hot) baths
  • Using elastic stockings
